Using the Syllabus to Support Learning
The syllabus is a central communication tool that outlines responsibilities, learning outcomes, assessments, and resources available to students. A well-designed syllabus helps set expectations, supports learning, and promotes student wellbeing.
Designing a Learner-Centered Syllabus
A learner-centered syllabus focuses on the student experience. By clarifying expectations, demystifying the “unwritten rules” of college (Berrett, 2015), and fostering transparency, it creates conditions for equitable learning, builds trust, and contributes to students’ sense of belonging.
Tools and Templates for Effective Syllabi
Effective syllabi combine clear course information with required statements and resources. The TLC has created an editable Syllabus Template that can be copied and adapted for courses. This template includes all components required by UCSC’s Committee on Courses of Instruction: see the syllabus requirements here.
Note: When creating your syllabus and assessments, keep in mind that UCSC Academic Senate policy dictates no assignment worth more than 12.5% of the grade can take place during the final week of instruction.
Essential Syllabus Statements
Syllabi should include key statements to ensure students understand course procedures and available resources. At minimum, these statements should address accessibility and inclusivity (DRC’s Guide on Accessibility Statements), academic integrity, late assignment and attendance policies, and Title IX/CARE. Other syllabus statements may be included at the discretion of the instructor where relevant.
The TLC’s Syllabus Template includes guidance on syllabus statements, along with sample language you can adapt for your own courses.
