Supporting Summer GSIs Through Peer Mentoring
The Summer GSI Peer Support Team is coordinated by the TLC and sponsored by Summer Session and the Division of Undergraduate Education. The program supports Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs) teaching during the Summer Sessions by providing peer support for equitable course design and implementation.
The Peer Support Team is made up of graduate students who have completed professional development programs with the TLC and are committed to accessible and equity-minded teaching.
How the Peer Support Team Works
Peer supporters, mentored by TLC staff, engage in professional development in effective peer mentoring and leverage their knowledge of evidence-based teaching practices to support their peers. While faculty instructors remain the primary supervisors of GSIs, the Peer Support Team offers additional teaching support through a peer-centered community model.
Peer Supporters are integrated into TLCโs graduate certificate program in Course Design & Delivery, offering GSIs ongoing support both in Spring (while refining course materials in GRAD 215: Equitable Course Design) and during the Summer Sessions as they teach.
What GSIs Can Expect:
- Personalized feedback on course materials (e.g., learning outcomes, assessments, lesson plans, syllabi)
- Resource sharing and guidance
- Non-evaluative peer observations of teaching
- One-on-one and group consultations
Note: GSIs who are not enrolled in the Course Design certificate program are still welcome to schedule a teaching consultation with a TLC staff member. Visit our Consultations page for more information.
How to Participate
The application period for the 2026 Peer Support Team will open in Winter 2026.
Eligibility: Graduate students who have completed TLCโs cohort-based professional development programs, such as Graduate Pedagogy Fellows or the Course Design Certificate, are given priority in the selection process.
