Design or Redesign a Course

The TLC provides individualized and program-based support for instructors at any stage of course development. Whether you are creating a new course or refining an existing one, our team can help you:

  • Align learning outcomes, assessments, and teaching activities
  • Incorporate inclusive and evidence-based teaching practices
  • Adapt courses for new modalities and evolving technologies
  • Use student outcome and demographic data to inform design decisions

We offer multiple pathways for support—through programs and learning communities, topical workshops, one-on-one consultations, and collaborative MOOC development. In addition, our Resource Library offers guides and examples to support equitable course design.

The TLC offers structured, cohort-based programs where instructors develop or redesign courses in community. These experiences provide sustained support, opportunities for peer learning, and mentorship from TLC staff to strengthen equity-minded teaching practices.

Course Design & Delivery Certificate Program

Designed for graduate student instructors teaching during the Summer Sessions, this program combines a 2-credit Spring course on Equitable Course Design with peer-led feedback and consultations in Spring and Summer. Participants develop equity-minded course materials and receive individualized mentorship.

Redesigning for Equity & Advancing Learning (Project REAL)

A five-week summer learning community where faculty collaborate to enhance course structure, integrate equity-minded practices, and improve student engagement.

The TLC offers 90-minute to two-hour workshops on key aspects of course design. All workshops are interactive, applicable to any discipline, and highlight strategies for equity, accessibility, and academic integrity.

Syllabus as an Equity Tool

Learn how to design learner-centered syllabi that promote equity and accessibility. Explore how syllabus language and design shape student outcomes, particularly for historically marginalized students.

Design for Integrity & Learning in the Age of AI

Explore how to integrate academic integrity support and assessment security into your course design. Identify strategies to help students ethically and responsibly use generative artificial intelligence.

The TLC provides one-on-one consultations tailored to your course and teaching context. Our instructional designers and education specialists offer personalized feedback, help with integrating equitable practices, and guidance on using data to inform course design.

For personalized support, TLC offers individual consultations with Instructional Designers and Education Specialists to assist with:

  • Applying course design and redesign strategies
  • Integrating equity-minded and inclusive practices
  • Incorporating digital tools and technologies to enhance accessibility
  • Developing assessment methods for student learning
  • Analyzing student outcomes data from previous courses and reviewing student demographic data for upcoming courses

See the consultations page for more information and to schedule.

The TLC partners with faculty to design and launch Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on Coursera. These asynchronous courses extend UCSC teaching to a global audience and showcase faculty expertise.

MOOCs are asynchronous, self-paced courses open to anyone worldwide. They differ from traditional credit-bearing courses by using automated or peer-reviewed assessments and by not requiring ongoing instructor participation after launch.

Courses developed and taught by UCSC instructors can be found at UCSC Courses on Coursera. These include offerings by faculty such as Bettina Aptheker, Erika Zavaleta, and Ira Pohl. As of 2025, more than 1.3 million learners from around the world have enrolled.

For additional inspiration, UC Santa Cruz faculty, students, and staff also have free access to thousands of courses on Coursera. Visit our Coursera for UCSC page to learn more.

Developing a MOOC is a collaborative process between faculty and the TLC. Interested faculty can reach out to explore opportunities for new courses.

The TLC Resource Library offers self-guided materials to support every stage of course design. From developing learning outcomes and designing assessments to integrating technology and creating accessible learning environments, the library provides practical guides you can adapt to your own courses.
