“I think a student may have misused generative AI — now what?”

This TLC resources is designed to guide you through the process of recognizing and responding when you suspect misuse of generative artificial intelligence (genAI) in your classroom.

Responding to misuse can involve a number of possible steps:

  1. Identifying genAI-produced work with multiple methods, such as comparing a student’s work to previous submissions, entering your assignment prompt into genAI, and scanning for common genAI characteristics
  2. Gathering information on suspicious submissions, starting with documenting the rationale for your concerns
  3. Meeting with the student, with the goal of separating the action (misuse of genAI) from the actor (the student as a human being)
  4. Following up with post-meeting actions, such as documenting your conversation with the student and making an official report of academic misconduct if you have decided to pursue one.

The Academic Integrity Office and TLC staff are available to discuss your approach to academic misconduct.
