Developing and Using Rubrics

A rubric is a scoring guide that makes clear what an instructor expects, what will be assessed, and how students’ work will be evaluated.

Rubrics provide a structured way to describe levels of student performance across specific criteria. They are especially useful for assignments with multiple dimensions to assess or evaluate.

Rubrics can help you:

  • Grade more efficiently and consistently, especially with TAs or readers
  • Minimize subjectivity to support fairer grading
  • Reduce student uncertainty and questions about grades
  • Encourage students to reflect on and evaluate their own work

The TLC Guide to Rubrics, presented in a slide deck format, walks instructors through the process of designing, implementing, and effectively using rubrics to support clear feedback, consistent grading, and student learning.
