Bring the TLC Into Your Grant
As experts in pedagogy, curriculum, and learning assessment, TLC partners with UCSC faculty on research grants that include an educational component. Whether you’re just beginning to shape an idea or responding to a specific call, we can help you think through possibilities, design impactful educational strategies, or partner on efforts such as pedagogy and mentoring training for faculty, graduate students, or postdocs; course design; or the development of learning assessments.
We offer flexible support—from informal consultation to formal collaboration—depending on the needs of your proposal.
How We Can Support Your Grant
We can contribute to your proposal in a variety of ways, tailored to your project’s goals and scope. Our team can:
- Design educational activities aligned with your professional and research goals
- Provide professional development to support your education plan
- Help articulate your goals for the educational activities
- Explore educational literature to strengthen your proposal
- Develop strategies to document your teaching excellence
- Design tools to assess student learning
While we can help you articulate and strengthen the educational aspects of your project, please note that we do not provide grant writing or program evaluation services. For that type of support, please contact the Office of Research Development.
Planning Ahead
- If you’d like TLC staff to serve as Co-Principal Investigators (co-PIs) or collaborators, please reach out at least four weeks in advance.
- To request a letter of support, please allow two weeks and include a copy of your proposal narrative.
- We welcome consultations at any stage of your grant process.
- As a reminder, TLC does not serve as an external evaluator for program grants or grant writing services. For that support, please reach out to the Office of Research Development.
Tips for a Strong Educational Component

- Scalable or replicable practices that demonstrate your leadership in teaching, such as course development linked to your innovative research
- Innovative educational practices that are distinct from typical approaches
- Assessment plans that contribute to knowledge in higher education
- Equitable teaching and assessment strategies within your discipline
