Preparing for the Course Approval Process

Preparing for the Course Approval Process is a program for current or future Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs) who are proposing to teach a new course or proposing a modality change for an existing course (e.g. redesigning an in-person course for an online modality).

This program is offered in collaboration with the Academic Senate Committee on Courses of Instruction to support Graduate Student Instructors in their preparation for the course approval process.

  • Understand the Academic Senate’s course approval process
  • Make a plan to address department- and campus-level expectations for your course
  • Apply foundational knowledge of integrated course design principles to your course syllabus (particularly course-level learning outcomes and assessment structures)
  • Make a plan to apply teaching strategies that engage students in alignment with the course learning goals and your course modality
  • Explain the pedagogical rationale for your course design choices in order to answer CCI’s required supplemental questions
  • Gain more individualized support and feedback on your drafted course approval materials once you have applied what you learned in the workshop

GSIs who complete this two-part program will receive a letter from the TLC indicating their successful completion. This letter can be attached to your course approval materials in the CAT system to communicate your collaboration with TLC to the Senate committee. While completion of the program does not guarantee course approval by CCI, it will likely result in a stronger application.

The Fall 2025 Course Approval program has concluded. Check back for more information about the Fall 2026 program.
