Teaching Statements & Portfolios

Developing a compelling teaching statement and portfolio is essential for academic job applications, particularly for college-level teaching positions. The TLC offers an online, self-paced Canvas course to guide UCSC graduate students and postdocs in creating or refining these documents. This resource helps articulate your teaching values, showcase your instructional practices, and demonstrate your impact on student learning. 

While tailored for graduate students and postdocs, the course is open to all members of the UCSC community. 

Through step-by-step modules, participants will:

  • Reflect on teaching values and how social positionality shapes pedagogy
  • Communicate teaching practices with clear, specific examples
  • Structure a teaching statement to highlight strengths and experiences
  • Review examples of effective teaching statements
  • Build a cohesive portfolio aligned with the statement
  • Incorporate student feedback and assessment data (e.g., SETS) into the portfolio

The self-paced design makes it easy to complete modules on your own schedule while developing polished materials that strengthen academic job applications.

To enroll in the course:

  1. Ensure you have access to your UCSC Canvas account.
  2. Click the “Self-Enroll in the Course” button below.
  3. Follow the prompts to add the course to your Canvas dashboard.

After completing the course and drafting your teaching statement or portfolio, you may request a consultation about your materials by emailing tlc@ucsc.edu.
