Carla Hernandez Garavito

Assistant Professor, Anthropology

Carla Hernández Garavito’s research centers on how communities came to integrate imperial institutions by indigenous and foreign empires as part of local history in the Peruvian Andes starting in the 15th century. As part of this focus, she is currently developing a collaborative project with traditional potters in Peru to explore how the partnership between artisans and their craft has endured and transformed during periods of political upheaval and facilitated the creation of spaces of political actions for communities from the prehispanic period to the present. As a Peruvian archaeologist trained outside of the US, she is excited to learn more about the transfer student experience and support UCSC students to thrive in our academic community.
