Jody Biehl

TLC Faculty Fellow (2023-24); Associate Teaching Professor, Humanities

Jody teaches journalism, media literacy and non-fiction writing courses in the Literature, Community Studies and (graduate) Science Communication programs. She is an award-winning journalist who worked as a foreign correspondent based in Berlin for the San Francisco Chronicle and as an editor at Der Spiegel, Germany’s leading newsweekly. She was the director of the SUNY Buffalo Journalism Program for 10 years before coming to UCSC in fall 2021. Jody worries about the decline of local news outlets nationally and the consequences this lack of information is having on our democracy. She currently serves as the Community Voices opinion editor at Lookout Santa Cruz, where she is working to be part of the solution, instead of just documenting the problem. She loves helping young writers find their voice. She is working with the Humanities division to infuse more experiential learning and internship components into courses and majors. She is hoping to use her time as a fellow to create a Humanizing Technology course, discuss ways to establish more equitable grading policies and brainstorm creative experiential learning models.
