CITL/Division of Student Success (DSS) Faculty Fellow (2017–18)
A Teaching Professor in the Writing Program, Kimberly Adilia Helmer is the recipient of two distinguished teaching awards granted by the University of Arizona and John Jay College, The City University of New York (CUNY) and CUNY’s Center for the Advancement of Teaching’s Scholar-In-Residence Award. As a CITL/DSS Faculty Fellow, Dr. Helmer facilitated a year-long Critical Friends Group (CFG): a community of practice that used CFG protocols to promote “slow” thinking, listening, and the asking of probing, clarifying questions in order to work out teaching ideas and assignments, problem-solve classroom dilemmas, refine or rethink classroom-based research, and analyze classroom data. CFG participants are also able to use CFG protocols to enhance their own classroom teaching.
