Madalen Claire Benson

Madalen is a Visual Studies PhD Candidate in the History of Art and Visual Culture department. Her teaching is driven by a duty to foster learning environments that empower students to critically reflect on the conditions of visuality in the worlds around them. Her research concerns land-based contemporary art practices; critical settler and Indigenous studies; the politics of land; liberalist legality and rights theory; extractive capitalism and environmental justice. With a Master of Arts in Art History, Theory and Criticism from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Bachelor of Arts, Honours in Art History and Philosophy from the University of Toronto, Madalen is a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Doctoral Fellowship recipient (2023-27). She is excited to learn more about equity-minded teaching as a Graduate Pedagogy Fellow in order to continue learning skills that help her deliver on her commitment to providing caring and compassionate pedagogy and mentorship.
