S. Sylvane Vaccarino-Ruiz

Sylvane is a PhD candidate in Social Psychology with a designated emphasis in Critical Race and Ethnic Studies. He is also a proud transfer student and UCSC alum. He researches spaces and practices that expand participation, critical dialogue, radical healing, and solidarity among youth and emerging adults of color. His dissertation is on the use of storytelling praxis in the undergraduate classroom as a form of historical memory recovery. He also teaches in the Writing Program and the Psychology Department, using different ungrading systems like contract grading and narrative evaluation. His research and teaching style reflect his background in community organizing and youth participatory action research.
